At its 98th meeting, held in Spain, the Executive Council of the UNWTO highlighted the role of tourist routes in fostering integration and development of the regions. The Council also discussed some key factors that stimulate the growth of tourism, such as visa facilitation and air connectivity, while recalling the role that tourism can play in the sustainable development agenda. The 98th Meeting of the Executive Council of the WTO was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on 5 and 6 June 2014.

Members of the Executive Council of the UNWTO recalled that regional integration leads to greater economic development and identified infrastructure, visa facilitation, transportation, public-private partnerships, coordination of public and branding as key factors in the success of the creation of tourist routes.

"The record tourism figures continue to renew confidence in the sector, but also remind us that a greater power comes greater responsibility: the responsibility to make sure that tourism growth will translate into improvements in livelihoods and a sustainable future for our planet and to the generations of tomorrow. While meeting in Santiago de Compostela to coincide with World Environment Day, take this opportunity to send a strong message to the world about our commitment to make tourism a real vector of sustainable development everywhere, "said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai, at the inauguration of the Council.

Mr. Rifai further emphasized the results of Spain in terms of international tourism and said "I take this opportunity to congratulate Spain on its consolidated as the third most visited country in the world leadership; and even better, the second in the world in terms of revenue generated by international tourism. "

The President of the Junta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, recalled during the event tourism's contribution to intercultural understanding and peace. "Tourism makes people better, enriches cultures and brings out the best in people, making each traveler on a 'silent ambassador'" he said.

The 98th Session of the Executive Council held in Spain, was organized by UNWTO and the Spanish Ministry of Tourism, under the leadership of Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, and was hosted by the Xunta de Galicia. The meeting was attended by over 170 participants from 54 Member States of the WTO (31 Executive Council members and 23 observer countries) as well as representatives of Associate and Affiliate Members.

On the occasion of the meeting of Council, UNWTO, in collaboration with the UNWTO Affiliate Member, Heritage Cities of Mankind Spain / UNESCO seminar "material and immaterial heritage and innovative tourism products."

The Executive Council is the governing body of the WTO and is responsible for ensuring that the organization carries out its work program and within budget. It meets at least twice a year and is composed of members elected by the General Assembly of WTO at the rate of one for every five Full Members. As a country hosting the headquarters of the WTO, Spain has a permanent seat on the Executive Board. Representatives of Associate and Affiliate Members participate in Council meetings as observers.

The Ninety-ninth meeting and the centenary meeting of the Executive Council of the UNWTO will be held in Uzbekistan and Croatia respectively.
